Cherry-Time

Cherries of the night are riper
Than the cherries pluckt at noon
Gather to your fairy piper
When he pipes his magic tune

Robert Graves, Cherry-Time

Yesterday was harvest day in our one-tree orchard. (This is a picture from last year, but it represents our recent take pretty well.) This year, the boys picked about half the cherries; the year before, about a third. I see the day coming soon when I can just send them out to gather the cherries without needing me to get the high clusters.

Now comes the pitting and the baking; I think I’ll avoid the cherry-tofu clafouti this year (don’t ask…) and stick to traditional pies.

  • Oh, but now we must know! What about the cherry tofu clafouti?

Two things that don’t go well together: tofu and dessert. The best that could be said of the clafouti is that it was perfectly vegan, and that it probably earned you some centuries out of Pergatory to eat it. But the only one of my guests who actually did eat it was a visiting Estonian, and only because (a) Estonians are exceedingly polite, and (b) our Estonian neighbor wasn’t able to translate “tofu”. I’ve since heard that real clafouti is quite the rich and decadent treat, so I might try the non-vegan, heavy-on-the-cream version with this year’s harvest.
